The annual North State Together Summit provides direct training, coaching, and capacity building to our partners across our five counties.

7:30-8:50 Breakfast/Networking/Regional Data Stroll

8:50-9:00 Welcome: Dr. Kevin O’Rorke, Chief Executive Officer of North State Together

9:00-9:45 Morning Keynote – Redefining Rural:  Dreama Gentry, Executive Director of Partners for Rural Impact, will kick of the summit by redefining rural, our challenges and opportunities, and the importance of our work to build capacity for our communities by using a data to identify problems and then using our local know-how to find appropriate solutions.  By com­bin­ing results-based lead­er­ship devel­op­ment, strate­gic invest­ments, local part­ner­ships and peer learn­ing, Dreama knows that our chil­dren in rur­al Northern California can be ready to enter school, thrive aca­d­e­m­i­cal­ly, and exit high school pre­pared for a career or high­er education.

10:00 – 11:00 Putting the “E” in SCAILE: Dr. Kate Mahar, Executive Director of SCAILE, will  facilitate the discussion on what equity means in our rural region a shared understanding that will guide our future regional cradle to career efforts.  

11:00-12:30 From Theory to Action: Mike Mozina, Senior Manager of Policy and Partnerships at StriveTogether, will cover the application of the StriveTogether Theory of Action Framework and the Pathway to Equitable Results toolkit. The 18 month support plan will be highlighted.

12:30-1:00 Buffet Lunch (Eat during 1:00 Keynote)

1:00-1:45 Afternoon Keynote – Systems Transformation through Policy Change: Josh Davis serves as Vice President of Policy and Partnerships for StriveTogether. He provides leadership and strategy for the organization’s policy, advocacy and mobilization work, while also leveraging national partnerships to accelerate progress throughout the Cradle to Career Network.

1:45-2:15 Achieving Policy Change through Collective Impact: Judy Flores, Shasta County Office of Education Superintendent: Shasta County Office of Education’s American Indian Advisory played a pivotal role in new legislation that provides excused absences for California students attending Native cultural ceremonies and events. The bill, sponsored by Assembly member Megan Dahle, addresses one of the primary causes of Native student’s chronically high rates of absenteeism. Judy will present on this incredible work that was done in our own communities and capture what happens when we use data to identify a challenge, but then use personal stories, multiple perspectives, and most of all listening to understand the root causes. The tremendous collective work has led to a new statewide policy AB 516 that will positively impact the north state and California as a whole.

2:30-3:45 County Pilot Projects: Dr. Kate Mahar, Executive Director of SCAILE will facilitate the introduction of a pilot project that each county can identify and launch during the next 18 months with support from North State Together and SCAILE. The 18 month support plan will also be introduced.

3:45-4:45 North State Together Policy Priorities: Mike Mozina, Senior Manager of Policy and Partnerships at StriveTogether, Josh Davis, Vice President of Policy and Partnerships at StriveTogether, Jamie Spielmann, Director of Planning and Development at North State Together, and Dr. Kate Mahar, Executive Director of SCAILE will facilitate this discussion on the framework for identifying our North State Together policy priorities. North State Together endorses legislation and policies as appropriate and issues community-wide calls to action for opportunities that have strong support from our local and regional county networks partners. Attendees will begin to form North State Together’s local, state, and federal cradle to career policy priorities that will impact the social economic mobility of their communities.
